Its the 2.5 Turbo unit and in the Focus it devlops 225bhp.

Taken from VPCUK

the B5254T5 (Focus ST/S40T5 LPT 225 BHP) is based on the B5254T2 (LPT 218 BHP) as is the B5254T4 (S60R HPT 300 BHP) the liner bores on all these engines are 2mm larger hence thinner than the original T5 so can cause problems if the engine is tuned aggressively and incorrectly. It still uses steel liners and is a real Volvo engine which IMHO Ford have used to great effect in the Focus ST, it has a compression ratio of 9.0:1 with a max boost of 0.65 BAR using 95 RON.

The length saving of around 25 mm and width narrowing was achieved by redesigning and repositioning of auxiliary components; these pics show the B5254T2, B5254T5 and B5234T3 (T5) liner to alloy thickness.

As my mate with his 'aggressivlely tuned' 2007 will testify, he's suffering from a bad case of cracked liners as we speak !

Spoke to a Volvo engineer of 20 years about this one a while back.

Apparently the block in the Focus is good for 300bhp guaranteed reliably, and 330bhp if you're gonna go for it - but any more and you'll crack your liners.

Luckily the Focus ST engine is very difficult to tune above 300bhp - the original turbo's max specification for airflow limits it to 285.

So don't listen to the pisch about 300bhp Focus ST's - won't happen without a hybrid or upgraded turbo.

285 is all you'll get on the stock turbo (and that's with all the bolt ons - intercooler, downpipe etc...) 295 with a hybrid turbo.

You should be OK unless you do the following:

- install a Crap tune (running too much boost in the midrange)
- strap on a GT28/30 Turbo or the one from the Focus RS.2 and get too greedy with the power and boost levels

Sometimes liners just crack - hope mine don't that's for sure!

So is the old 2.3 a better lump for tuning/extracting more power?

best one for tuning is the late 2.4 T5 in the S60 T5

NOT the 2.5 - liners too thin

2.3 is still a better bet than the focus 2.5 (which is only in the S40 T5 anyway)

Yes the 2.3 is a better engine for tuning, but even these can crack if you don't know what your doing.

As fas as I am concerned the Focus/S40, V50 engines should not be considered as a T5 engine.

Anybody have any more input on this subject?

Thinking of buying a Focus ST3 with the 221hp T5 lump.

I owned an 07 plate st-2 for over 3 years and running a dreamscience dsci map since day 1, never missed a beat or cost me a penny other than servicing and tyres in over 20k miles.
Would have another in a heartbeat if I could afford the purchase price.

Hey bud. Thanks for the input.

Ive done a few hours research and it seems the cracked liner issue has really put me off.

I'll stick to sourcing a facelifted V70 T5 at almost half the price of the ST.

Thanks.
