Default "Engine system service required" on and off in cycle

Re: 2002 S80 2.9 Auto Transmission

I recently see "engine system service required" on the dashboard. The message is on and off every few hundred kilometers. The interval ranges between 30KM and 200KM. It drives all the same and I experience no problems.

I took it to a garage but unfortunately the message disappeared at that time and the mechanic didn't find anything suspicious. This became more and more annoying and worrying.

Does any one experience the same?

I had this on and off for two years with no engine faults. Recently my ABS stopped working and after that, the message was permanent. Vida pointed to a left front wheel mechanical and sensor failure. After changing the left front ABS reluctor ring, both the engine system and ABS service messages disappeared. After a few days, the 'Engine system service' message was back to intermittent so I suspect it is picking up on worn ABS reluctor rings and sensors long before the ABS fails. Might be worth looking at the state of your reluctor rings.

You need to hook it up to the correct Volvo diagnostics & then you'll see a log of every time it has happened, along with the possible causes & solutions.

Nothing logged on mine other than the ABS issue. I think the 'Engine System Service Required' covers a group of items associated with the engine operation but not necessarily an engine issue.
