Talking How to distinguish D5's????

Hi

I'm searching for my Volvo and my interest falls on the S60 D5.
I'm buying used and I need to find out how can I distinguish a D5 with 163bhp and the D5 185bhp...

Any help?

thanks

Different colour rocker covers I think its been discussed before....

When they started doing the 185, wasnt this badged the D5 and the 163 became a 2.4D?

and does it mention it on the log book?

Not in mine.

The 163 bhp engine type no. is D5244T so it's always going to be a D5..... as Volvo wrote on the back of the car. They introduced the 183 bhp engine as a cleaner improved one to meet the latest euro 4 emission requirements in 2006. The didn't market the car with different D5 engines at the same time so no need for different lables, other than the year....2005 and late 2006 models had different engines. I think it coincided with the change to the square rear clear lights but I'm not a 100% sure. But that would make it easy to identify.

I've just realised that you guys may be talking about other cars than the XC90. I have no idea how they introduced the 183 bhp on the rest of the range. All D5 based cars would have to have been changed to 185 bhp engine though because of the necessity of meeting the euro 4 emissions legislation.

Just ask if it's a Euro 3 or Euro 4 engine.

Having just written the above, I've just read this....... "During 2009, we will offer a front-wheel driven 2.4-litre version powered by a Euro 5 diesel engine producing 163 horsepower and with a CO2 rating of around 170 g/km," reveals Fredrik Arp.

So next year I guess it could all change yet again.

Took me a few minuets to work out what was different about the engines, then I twigged, the cars don't have a snorkel like the XC's do.

Sorry guys - anyone know how to differentiate post 2005 EU4 between 163 and 185 by a visual inspection - let's assume the car is debadged and I have no access to the Volvo database.

Engine covers are different colours. Grey with black edge should be 185bhp, if it's all black should be a 163bhp I believe.

Thanks Nunchukhamster but you are going to love this - both 163 and 185 in EU4 are grey/silver. However, if someone can educate me otherwise, happy to listen.

PS the all black cover was 163bhp D5 upto 2005 I believe.

Tried to find this on our site but it seems out of date. This seems the most logical excepting VIN identification?

We think alike
