Engine transplant
I have just acquired a 240 GL estate (F reg) with a B200E motor and automatic transmission. I already have a 240 GLT estate (F reg) with a B230E motor and manual transmission.
Can I swap the motor from the GLT to the GL and if so what do I need to look out for in the way of potential problems. Thanks in advance.

RE: Engine transplant
If both engines have the distributor to the rear of the camshaft you should have no problems. Similarly if both engines have the distributor mounted at the front left side of the crankcase no problem. It is when one does and the other don't that you will have problems. All the best, Peter |

RE: Engine transplant
Hi Peter,
Thanks for that. Both engines have the distributor at the front left of the block. It looks like I will have to rely on my Haynes book for further info on doing the swap.

RE: Engine transplant
A lot depends on whether you are, as you say, only swapping the motor, or are you moving the whole engine plus gearbox?
Do they have the same fuel and ignition systems? The short answer is anything can be swapped, but you may need to work back up into the various systems to extract the right bits. BTW, I thought all 240s had their distributor on the block - there isn't room at the back of the camshaft, unlike the 740? |

RE: Engine transplant
This is intended to be a transfer of the engine only - including the attached parts except the power steering pump.
Radiator hoses look to be same shape and fittings even allowing for the transmission fluid cooler. Both are fuel injection so the complete inlet manifold assembly can go as is. Exhaust manifold to down-pipe joint looks the same so the manifold can stay on. The only difference (apart from capacity) is that the donor car is manual and the recipient is automatic.

RE: Engine transplant
I have a 244 GLT with the distributor at camshaft rear. This is an "F" plate car with B200E engine and auto box. The bulkhead was modified to allow clearance although USA blokes do their own modifying of the older 200s by dint of careful mallet work, some even welding in a dished plate having cut an access hole in the bulkhead. All the best, Peter |
