S80 2.9 Auto 51 reg - disposal due to gearbox failure
Lovely car; usual spec; burgundy red; engine sound; alloys; cd changer etc. Can't afford the money they're asking for a replacement/refurb box. Reluctant to let it go to the scrappie. Any offers?

Unable to PM those who have responded?! Due to message "Sorry, you can only send messages to the Administrators group until you have 30 posts". Not sure I understand the grammar?

Thank you for your interest. Not sure how much detail you would like? Re the gearbox or the car generally? Bear in mind this is a non-mechanic talking!
Gearbox story is that about six weeks ago I perceived a sound like two metallic surfaces grating together. Not very loud but enough to be aware of. Put it on the to do list but never got round to having it looked at. About ten days ago whilst driving, a metallic crunching noise happened which didn't sound too healthy. It was a one-off, not continuous, but since then the grating is accompanied by a sort of whining/humming noise; again not very loud. It drives ok but seems to struggle to change up (maybe not ok!). Local mechanic had a look and after researching transmission shops, said it would be £3,700 including fitting etc., which was rather depressing. Other than that - bodywork ok apart from a crease on o/s rear wing and a couple of dings on n/s front. Driver's window came off its track a couple of weeks ago. Front passenger door lock has intermittent problem - always in cold weather - which probably leads to the message 'alarm system service required'. Central locking ok using key. Colour is burgundy red. No sun roof. Air-con. CD changer. Cream leather. Let me know if you need any more info. |

Buy a 2nd hand box and get that fitted. Should not cost any where near £3k!
More around £1k including box and fitting

Price you've been quoted is way OTT. The geartronic 'box failed on my V70 T5 and I was recommended to contact Sheffield Gearboxes http://sheffieldgearboxes.co.uk
They refurbed the 'box and charged £1100 (from memory) and provided a 1 yr warranty. Might be to far for you to travel, but try looking for recommendations for a similar gearbox specialist (not a normal independent garage). |

I'm reading your description of the problem and it's ringing very true to what I'm currently experiencing with my Subaru Legacy, certainly the metallic whine and on the odd occaision a lack of upchange. Time for a manual conversion i think as mine was rebuilt 15k miles ago, guess the auto box struggles with additional power.
Regarding your car, I may have a cheaper solution if you want to keep the car, drop me an email and we can talk. Ryangordon86@hotmail.co.uk |
