Clunk on pull off
Hi Guys, little bit of help needed!
When i pull off rom stand still in the mornings and usually until the car is warm im getting a "clunk" sound comming from what appears to be the drivers side of my S60 D5 2003. Now i have changed the wishbones last September for new ones, changed the drop links, checked brakes etc all fine. No play in suspension mount or Drive shaft that i can tell, only place i found a bit of play (maybe 2mm) if that was from the inner tie rod on that side. Also the track rod end seemed to clonk when rocked but my old ones feel the same and i never had the noise then. Would this small inner tie rod play cause a clonk or knock on pull off?? never happends slowing down or audible above 30mph (could be engine drowning it out) or could it be the engine mount on drivers side? or ball joint? ANy advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Rich |

Thanks for that very very helpful! got some new ideas to try!
I have replaced the torque rod last year unless it has gone again???? if so that will be warranty complaints as it is genuine volvo! What would be the symptoms of a worn, failed ball joint? and could it be the inner tie rod? Thanks again! |

Hello, What's the mileage of your '03? A front end shop can "twist and pry" to locate loose or worn parts. A worn ball joint can cause a clunk. I only know that because I've read it. I'd guess a worn tie rod end could be stressed by trying to go into long, gentle turns such that you might feel a wobble. A trained eye can see the play as he prods around. Kira

Hi Kira,
Its done 123,000 miles, doesnt seem to make any clunk noises once warmed up either, only when cold which i find strange or if it does its quieter! and definately seems to be coming more from the hub side than the engine side of the drive shaft! i was thinking it was the lower ball joint as that is the only bit ive been unable to get at and look at, but its only as its taking off initially, not slowing down. It did have subframe work done last septemeber, maybe something has come loose? Thanks again, any advice is grately appreciated as always! |

Thanks Both,
Pete, i had new driveshaft bolts 2 weeks ago, the old type not the xc ones with the rubber. Torqued them up as i thought it could have been axle "ping" although it does sound like that sort of noise still I will check the anti roll bar tonight! Thanks again! |

Hello, While it's a LTTLE bit of work, the best way to isolate the ARB (sway bar) is to disconnect it by removing one of the mounting nuts from one side. Choose a side and crack the front wheel bolts loose, jack up car, set on stand, remove wheel, set the jack beneath the lower control arm remove the top nut of the sway bar link. You need the jack to de-stress the force on the link to facilitate removal. If your clunk was caused by the ARB aka sway bar bushings or links, it'll be gone. Checking everything else; gently rotating tie rod ends with a pipe wrench to check for wear or carefully prying at a ball joint with a pinch bar, while something we all can do, requires a trained eye to interpret. OK, on top of all the above possible causes, could it possibly be the ABS self test??? This usually happens shortly after starting the car.
