Newly inherited 340
Afternoon,
Unfortunately Grandpa has had to move to a care home and the house clear-out has begun. He has a Volvo 340 which has always been garaged, but is in average condition. The car had its last trip on the way back from the MOT station on the 23 March 2012. It was MOT'd with an indicated 66,664 miles on the clock and now shows just two miles more than that. Please feel free to look at the MOT history of the car. You will see that a good deal of work must have been done to deal with corrosion on the car. I tried to get the car started by adding some new fuel and using a boost pack, but have had no luck. Cosmetically there are a couple of areas that are rusting including around the mirror on the driver’s door and at the rear nearside. I had a romantic notion about getting this car started and using it for a short while for old-times-sake, but that has not materialised! I realise these cars are not worth very much in even good condition, but would really like if this car could be of use to someone rather than having it scrapped. If you would like the car, it is yours for a small donation to Cancer Research UK. We are based in Glasgow, G44. Please feel free to PM me for more details. |

I regret that I am not in a position to offer a home to your car, but do hope that you are successful in placing it with someone who will use and appreciate it.
It would be nice if you were able to use the car yourself as you intended. I wonder why it would not start? My guess is that the battery has failed completely due to standing. A boost pack may overcome the problems of a 'flat' battery, but may well be insufficient if the battery itself is u/s. Do you have a spare battery that you could try - it may still be possible to realise your dream! Regards, John.

Shame you are in Glasgow, just too far away. I think those little Volvos are starting to become popular and ever so slightly collectable, much like the escort, due to their low survival rate and the scrappage schemes thinning older stuff out. Don't scrap it but try gumtree/fleebay/practical classics. Good luck!

Whack a new battery on it, put some fuel in the float bowl and try again. If it doesn't start then check it has spark at the plugs.

Just take the air filter off chuck 1cm of fuel in a jam jar down the carb and it should start. It may take a while to get the fuel from the tank, and you need about 10L.

What happened with this car, did it find a home/did you get it running and keep it?
