Correctly (forums huh)? I can confirm as below - so best to check what the vehicles owners manual specifies.

My point is, its a toyota transmission so use the toyota fluid - either the Genuine ATF WS or the Type T-IV depending on your vehicle. Its cheap and you don't have to worry about secondary manufacturer interpretation the oil specification incorrectly.

Ultimately though - it's irrelevant as a pre 2011 box will quite happily run on 3324 and vice versa... the later spec i slightly lower viscosity for economy reasons. My only counsel would be not to mix them - if you do change spec you should do a full flush.

I strongly suspect (rather than know) the XC90 changed later due to the box being slightly less reliable in that platform as a result of its significant extra weight and hence Volvo stuck with the higher viscosity oil.
Volvo changed the XC90 transmission fluid spec to JWS3324/AW-1 in 2012. Any XC90 models older than 2012 with the TF80 gearbox required JWS3309 spec fluid. *See this quote from another topic below from an XC90 owner*

I looked into this before changing mine last year, from memory the the early pre face lift used JWS 3309 then later post face lift changed to AW1.

The transmission fluid spec requirement in other Volvo models (NOT THE XC90), as you say, changed to JWS3324/AW-1 around 2011. Therefore, other Volvo models apart from the XC90 that are older than 2011 with the TF80 transmission would have required JWS3309 spec fluid.

So basically;

XC90 2011 or older - JWS3309 transmission fluid
XC90 2012 or newer - JWS3324/AW-1 transmission fluid

Other Volvo models (Excluding the XC90)

2010 or older - JWS3309 transmission fluid
2011 or newer - JWS3324/AW-1 transmission fluid

****This applies to vehicles with the TF80 transmission****

Dont flush, just change. Ususlly flush products give no positive results, only negative, trouble is, you won't know until too late....

It's not 'cheap' by any definition that includes Mannol in the equation.

I've watched that video before, its a good one!

I'd only flush a transmission on a car if I knew it had been looked after, i.e. The previous owner had serviced the transmission regularly with receipts to prove so, or if I'd done it myself regularly throughout my ownership. If it was a used vehicle with high mileage or no records of the fluid being changed before, then I'd do a fluid change. This is just my opinion though, so do what you feel is best on your car. I'm not dictating what anyone should or shouldn't do because at the end of the day, the choice is theirs.

***Note, by "flush", I mean using the "Gibbons method" to changing the fluid (Which is explained basically in the video above) & not flushing as in using some kind of chemical agent or additive. I wouldn't use flushing chemicals under any circumstances whether I drained & filled the transmission (fluid change) or flushed it using the Gibbons method.

I stand corrected & thank you, it's MY2012 the XC90 moved to AW1, a year after other Volvo models - for UK spec cars specifically, the change was a year later in the U.S. I believe.

However I come back to, so long as you're changing the full fluid, it really doesn't matter, either spec of fluid is compatible for the TF80. Whilst you should try to stick with what the manufacturer specifies, you will not harm the gearbox in anyway if you use 3309 in a post 2012MY vehicle or 3324 in a pre 2012MY.
