Default Advice on using a mechanic.

Hi, basically I need to replace the swirl flaps on my xc70 d5 2007 auto. It's leaking oil and is something I am not able to do myself.

My regularly mechanic has gone a AWOL so I will have to find someone to do it with little knowledge about them. My local Volvo garage is a little expensive, I can save a few hundred quid if I go to a vilvo specialist but he is over a hours drive away. The third option is to find a local mechanic.

Is this a job a local mechanic can do relatively easy or is it a specialist job? What are peoples opinions on the three options? Thanks.

I'm pretty handy, never used to have to take my old fords to the garage, did it all myself. But, Volvo seems a lot more complex and it's something I wouldn't want to mess up. The quotes I've had so far are Volvo themselves £700 and a Volvo specialist is £500. So there a bit harsh.

nothing I've done yet has been any more difficult than any other car I've worked on. easier actually because all my previous cars had rust-welded bolts and this one's been really well looked after

the only annoying thing is this volvo fascination with bloody torx bolts, what is that about.. but I bought a set of sockets now

I always watch a few youtube vids first so there's no surprises

is this the one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir_xPsS_PsQ

I can do the majority of things, brake pads are brake pads on any car, but, I’ve always had petrol so a Diesel engine is over my head at the moment. I suspect getting the injectors out will be a nightmare. If everything would go fine I probably wouldn’t have a problem, but it never does and I’m riddled with arthritis which doesn’t help if things get stuck!

How did you get on with removing the injectors?

A big chunk of the cost is the new injector pipes ...
you get what you pay for generally with Technician labour these days ..
