Difficult to say without more information, does it look like it was done at the factory or is it an alteration someone's bodged on there?

do you have a button on the end of the indicator stalk, which I assume would normally mean the screen is supposed to be there and do something, even just basic messages?

as far as I know even the most basic model has at least the door open / light bulb blown messages? maybe someone can correct me on that if not

Agree - it is most odd the very basic 2001 V70 Torslanda I had a couple of years ago had the message screen.

maybe some previous owner tried doing something with it and messed it up somehow and just blanked it off

OR there was some annoying recurring message and they just blanked it. does the alarm work, for example

have you read the codes with VIDA, is there anything troublesome they were trying to hide?

would have thought the worst things would also show the triangle or EML as well though in fairness

It's easily missed; I take it this was your first venture into this Volvo model?

As others have said, even the basic ones (like my S80) that don't have the on-board computer will flag up doors open etc.

Another check you should do before questioning that garage is, does the warning triangle shape come on and then go off when you start the car?

It should disappear when running, but will stay orange or red depending upon how serious a message it's trying to tell you about.

Eg, doors open = red.

So check whether they blanked that too (not sure the S60s have this, guess they do?
