Default XC90 D5 2002 - Gear Box Issue

I have a 2002 Volve XC90 D5 done about 80,000 miles - Had an oil leak, garage had to strip down - found leak at crankshaft seal - while gearbox was out they changed the gearbox transmission fluid - now car is all back together it will hardly move and not go above third gear - has anyone go any ideas about why this has happened and how to fix the issue short of a new gearbox - Thanks in advance for your help

Have you asked the garage what they have dome and more importantly how they are going to fix it.?

Sounds to me like the torque convertor may not have been installed in the correct way/manner.

In addition, check what fluid they installed .

It MUST meet JWS 3309 spec NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!

^^^^ That really.

Do you mean 2002 or 2012?

There is a specific process to correctly load the torque converter into the gearbox, which is turning it in a certain direction and pushing it into the gearbox until you see and hear it drop TWICE as two further sets of splines engage. That can sometimes involve 20-30 turns. If this is not done, the last set of splines that wont have engaged are the oil pump drive and the effect of that is the torque converter and oil pump are damaged and the box is stuck in third gear when in "D", it won't shift and will slip in reverse.

If the garage have made that mistake, then I would suggest they aren't experienced with this gearbox type and a specialist will need to sort it (at their expense).

I really do wonder sometimes why we bother.

Sorry have read your replies without logging in - passed on your thoughts on the gearbox to the garage

Garage has tied taking gearbox out again and refitting - but it is no better

Garage has spoken to a gearbox specialist, says the gearbox will need to be sent to specialist - and the gearbox pump is not available from volvo so a third party pump will have to be fitted

Not good news

The one constant here is your garage. Is it a generic garage or a Volvo specialist?

80,000 miles is (to me) very low mileage for any xc90 let alone an '02' car, I suspect one of the first xc90s

Very difficult question, but are you confindent in your garage?

I speak as one who trusted a garage to sort a faulty head gasket on my 03 xc90.

In the end I had to take her to a good indie Volvo garage and suffer the cost of a replacement engine due to the incompetence of the first garage.

Now yours may be fine... But I fear ...

I didn't think there where any 02 XC90's - the first UK deliveries where Jan/Feb 2003 on a 52 plate. Hence, given the mileage, I suspect he means 2012?
