Default Tachometer

Thought to share a bit of success on my 73 164. She had no tacho - just the Volvo blanking plate and I see a tacho as a necessity so thought how to solve. I found a good condition tacho from a 260 series ex US. Took off blanking plate, found mounting points and electrical terminals already there. Bolted tacho in, put in a single feed to coil negative and done - works well! Great and simple upgrade for those that don’t have a tacho already.

I've been asked if I can put a 164 rev-counter into a friends 144 of that period so interested to read your findings. However, of course the 164-part is marked 6-zyl rather than 4: would you know if that would work? Other stages done OK but as it reads impulses from coil guess it might not. Any thoughts?

Hi, I think not. Yes it will move but it will be a factor out. I had similar with my Triumph Stag when I bought it - tacho reading a factor of 2 too low as someone had fitted a 4 pot smiths tacho from an MGB. I fitted the 8 pot and immediately spot on. So, in short, find a four-pot tacho from a Volvo of that era and it should pop right in.
