Drain & fill (approx 3L). Adaptions reset, fluid counter reset, gear position sensor calibrated & checked for software updates. It cost £95 including labour (Volvo independent garage).

Has anyone got an idea as to why my local Indy (Volmech, Thornaby) would want £300 ?

I didn’t have a full flush done, just a drain & fill on mine (which is basically a partial fluid change). Although, I’ve had a drain & fill done once before too (last year). The mechanic told me that the transmission fluid that come out this time “wasn’t bad at all”, but its now had another 3L of fresh fluid because I’ve had it done again. The adaptions have been reset, fluid counter has been reset & the gear position sensor has been calibrated. My indy doesn’t do flushing, only drain & fills. Its the cheapest option really, but you need to get it done every so often as opposed to in one hit. I’d check with your indy what their price entails. If its £300 for a drain & fill, its a rip off. If its for a full flush, which means you’ll get clean transmission fluid in one visit, then that’s about the going rate. As my indy doesn’t do flushing, drain & fill was the best option for me & the cheapest!

Thanks for the reply Kev, very comprehensive.
Would it be worth having the oil condition examined prior, to determine whether a full or partial swap is necessary do you think ? Is that what your guy did ? If having a full change done then perhaps a check of the fluid condition once completed with a comparison made against fresh fluid would be informative ? I understand it involves nothing more sophisticated than three sheets of white kitchen paper....

A flush = All fluid changed in one go. Drain & fill = Partial change. You won’t get as much fluid out using this method, but if you do it 2/3 times over a period of time, you’ll have clean fluid that has been changed steadily & less chance of dislodging old dirt/debris. You’ll get approx 3L of fluid out doing a drain & fill (the rest is inside the torque convertor etc, which can’t be drained by simply doing a drain & fill or “sump dump”). What’s the mileage on your car? Has your car ever had a transmission fluid change before? If not, I wouldn’t expect it to be too clean at 13 years old. Would you be doing the work yourself, or just let your indy do it? I knew my fluid wasn’t clean, as it wasn’t changed for over 100,000 miles! So I didn’t inspect the fluid, but I was told it wasn’t very clean by the indy garage (to be expected). Being honest, I’m a fan of the drain & fills. Now people may disagree, but I think flushing an older transmission isn’t a good idea because there’s potential to dislodge dirt inside the internals that have built up over the years. Draining & filling is simply that... drain the fluid & then add some. You don’t have to disconnect any transmission oil cooler lines & use litres upon litres of fluid (hence why a full flush is expensive). Personally, I’d do a drain & fill with a view to repeating the process in a few months (after the car has done a few miles). Then the new fluid gets chance to mix with what’s inside the transmission already (what you couldn’t drain). When you repeat the process, you’re effectively renewing the fluid steadily & after 2/3 times, you’ll have practically 90%+ changed. A full flush does it all in one go, but I’m not a fan of that (especially on an older car/one that has no records of a fluid change before) & its expensive!

Finally got round to tackling the list of updates to my 2015 D4 AWD - some 2 years later but COVID & life got in the way!!
Now need to give it a well earned clean & detail.
