High mileage V70
I have been looking for a V70 auto for a little while now with a tight purchase budget of £4k to £4.5k I ve been looking at 07 to 58 plates as these seem to be in my budget, but I ve now found a 59 plate 205 hp model. I dont know a great deal about this model as it doesnt appear to be very common, it looks good spec with history and appears well looked after, the only thing is its got 180000 on the clock, I know this wouldnt be of too much concern on a lower powered model as they seem to just keep going but any guidance on this model would be appreciated.

Got the same car on a 59, mines got 171,000 so just a little lower mileage. You’d never guess as it drives so well.
One thing with that engine, as documented in my ‘progress’ thread - the thermostat is a complete barsteward to change. As the dash doesn’t have a coolant temperature gauge, see if the seller will let you measure the coolant temperature through the obd2 port. |

180,000 miles is nothing on one of these really. Just check the history to see that its had regular services including transmission fluid changes. Check that the cam belt has been replaced as well as the auxiliary belts & tensioner (important, as if any of these belts fail, your engine is either scrap or it'll cost you a fortune to repair). D5's are great engines though.

Been and had a look at the car today and it looks good lots of receipts , timing belt done in 2018 at 125000. The engine was warm when I got there but it was slow starting, but when running it sounded good, boy did it have some get up and go on the test drive. My only concerns are the slight smell of exhaust fumes in the car after a run and the header tank was black and I couldn't see the coolant level, i couldn't remove the cap as the engine was hot. l thought the tanks were a clear white in colour so does this mean there is engine oil in the coolant, I know that there is a cooler that can leak so just wondering if that's a problem. As for transmission oil changes there is no evidence of this.

D5 205 bhp engine
Hi, The 205 BHP Engine is also used in our XC60 (2009), great engine, derived from previous versions of D5, we have had S60, V70 and XC90 all fitted with D5 engines, great engines, just keep oil and filter changes regular, very reliable
Good luck |

Not being able to see the coolant sounds suspicious to me & there could well be oil in the coolant, which is turning the reservoir black (oil cooler leak or possibly even a head gasket issue). It can be fixed with a new cooler, new hoses & a few coolant flushes... but it won't be a cheap fix either (if its an oil cooler issue). You could also have a split intercooler... have a look underneath the car & see if there's any oil residue around the radiator area. If its the head gasket, then that's even more expensive. I'd investigate that coolant reservoir & intercooler properly before making a final decision. Have a look inside the reservoir when the car is cold... you should see no oil in it. Fumes smell inside the cabin could simply be an oil leak in the engine dripping onto hot parts & then coming through the vents. Again, something that needs investigation. It sounds like there's underlying issues here, none of which will be be cheap to fix. Personally, I'd look at another car.

Never visit a car that has a warm engine or is already running.
See it stone cold, you get to hear everything.. |
