Interesting article :

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/ca...back-cars.html

Whilst the Volvo sits quite low in the "good" chart, it's notable that it fares way better than BMW, AUDI, Mercedes etc. Also interesting that Renault does better than most (all) Puegeot/Citroen -and..... the Golf. You're 50% more likely to have to have a problem with a Golf.

Also interesting that clutch problems are the most popular complaint - I wonder if most of those are on the earlier cars with the Ford/PSA 4-pot 1.6D?

Good result for the Astra too - made in Ellesmere Port!

To be fair, they have chosen a very specific a class there that will probably be hammered every time it's driven so no surprises that one comes in low.

They also had the S3. It’s not really a fair comparison as when you reduce the number of cars sold, against a few people who have issues, with Niche cars like that the percentage is greater it is also obvious that the costs with the German and Alfa etc are a lot greater in comparison with the cheaper french cars.

Golf doesn’t surprise me, I know many people who have issues with VWs yet everyone sees them as the golden chalice of cars. It really winds me up.

As I read the article the the comparison is across the whole A3 range as well as the S3 which it treats as a separate car (and the A45). In the Volvo range there was the V40 T5 AWD which is presumably bundled in with all the figures.

I think it's the fairest comparison of them all - the data from used car warranty companies on how many times and how much they have had to pay out? It's not a user survey which is subjective (i.e. the buyer of a £8k Dacia is less likely to complain about cabin rattles than the buyer for say a £40k premium hatchback).

The other point is not only are the costs higher with even the "cooking versions" of the German cars, the percentage of owners who make a claim (regardless of cost) is higher too - significantly so in some cases.

The real impact on your wallet is the average cost x number of claims.
