Offside inner drive shaft
Hi all
When I had my car MOT'd in December last year it came up with a minor defect of 'Offside Front Inner Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deteriorated'. Obviously the MOT is due again soon so I'm concerned this issue might mean it fails this year. Does anyone know how simple/difficult this job is to sort out on a driveway for a fairly competent person (me ) or is it a case that I'd be better off taking it to an Indy to save me the grief? Any advice would be appreciated thanks including rough idea on costs involved. Cheers

To do the job properly you need to split the shaft in order to fit the new boot. Volvo may do the boots but do not do cv joints, it's a new shaft from them at eye watering price.
If you can get hold of vida it will tell you in detail how to do it Yourself can get 3rd party cv joints of varying price and quality along with boots. Personally I would look at fitting new joints, all that work stripping the shaft off the car and then stripping the shaft itself to change the boot on a joint that has run a year with a deteriated boot, nah, new joint and boot and be done with it. If you decide to change the shaft compleatly look at Shaftec units. 24 months 24000 mile garentee. I used one of their shafts for the nearside front on my xc70, under £200, volvo price £820. Vida will also show you a picture of the volvo special tool to leaver the wishbone down. I made one from 20 mm x5mm flat bar bent to the shown shape and a 120mm M12 bolt, then used the handle of my 600 mm power bar to pry the whishbone down off the strut , this on the nearside anyway allowed me to swing the strut out and withdraw the drive shaft from the hub. It was held in the gearbox by a spring circling which required a sharp tug on a 90 degree tyre leaver behind the inner cv joint to persuade it to come off. Tyre leaver was a Royston one from screwfix I think that cost me a tenner, the 90 degree bend on one end made it perfect for the job. Mines a manual and I was changing the gearbox oil anyway so drained the box before I started, wether you will get leakage from the differential without draining afraid I don't know. Paul. |

Thanks Green Van Man for such an in depth reply. I would definitely be going down the route of replacing the shaft rather than just the boot. As you say it would be pointless if then the joint failed at a later date.
I will contact that company and see how much they sell for as the website doesn't have prices. No way I'm paying volvo prices

This is the video when I did my P2 https://youtu.be/1KcAAPHhaoQ
The general principles should still apply.

Here is a video that displays removing the CV joint from the half-shaft and also a link to a tool that could make your life easier.
DON'T use plastic tie-wraps on your gators or you will be replacing the joint sooner than you think due to water ingress.

A good source of driveshafts for these cars are breakers in Sweden. I picked up a nearly new offside one off an S60 T6 to replace one on my V8. It was sub £200 delivered.
