Intermittant rumble noise
2007 V70 D5. Had intermittent rumble noise, particularly noticeable at speed, would describe it as being like driving on a cattle grid overlaid with thick carpet... if you can imagine such a thing. No steering vibration when it happened.
Was thinking wheel bearings. Had them checked at local indy, all good but they noticed rear offside brake caliper was partly seizing. That would explain intermittent nature of problem. The disc was obviously heating and distorting just enough at speed to cause the deep rumble. Fortunately the disc was ok. Just needed a new caliper and pad set. |

Would you post what the final bill was for the work (inspection, caliper and pad replacement)please. Include if the caliper was new or rebuilt and if the rotor(s) was(were) dressed. Kira

It all came to £300 for one caliper and a set of pads each side. This was at Mr Clutch. I couldn't shop around because of risking further damage to the disc so I just went to the nearest garage. £150 new caliper, £120 pads plus clean and adjust handbrake.

How did they check the bearings? Usually the brakes and rotors must be removed to properly feel the bearing.
That said, the first thing to inspect are the tires, I had this situation with rumbling and suspected a bearing, it was the tires instead.

They just got the wheels off the ground and looked for excess bearing play by holding each side of the wheels and tugging hard watching and feeling for any movement. They felt for any lumpiness while the wheels were rotated by hand. Thats when they gave me warning that a caliper wasn't behaving.

Hats off to those who can diagnose shot bearing without even taking the wheel off!
