Sensible?

We own cars that are 30yrs old, cost a fortune in fuel, are mega underpowered and are held together with rust and love haha

Good point, well made Problemchild.

Alan

PS. My Volvos are 59 and 42 years old - even less sensible!

Mine is 45 years old , all the STW has been cut out and new steel put in.
Running on 195/70 R14s ,it gives the comfort and ground clearance a modern speed bump strewn environment requires.
Being vintage class , the money I save on tax and insurance pays for plenty of go go juice.

How did you get on with the new viscous fan? Did it solve the overheating issue?

No but it’s better (resting just above level) and there is MUCH better airflow

It was clearly past it’s best

Top hose is about 85degC and bottom hose is about 75degC with rad about 40degC

This doesn’t seem right to me tbh

So in lieu of another flush of the system and putting it all back together again, I secured a new rad for £50 and will replace that too after another flush

In other news - given how valuable petrol is, I thought I’d get a locking cap

Got it from someone breaking a 240

Needed a good clean and degreasing and I even wire brushed the key as it had a bit of rust

Silicone spray in the lock mechanism and then changed over the seal as the new cap one was wrecked

Turned out not too bad tbh but it’s still got 20+ years of petrol on it

Next up I have some new gas struts for the boot coming as the boot stays up but falls pretty hard once horizontal

85C sounds perfectly normal for the top hose, that isn't overheating at all. The system is pressurised so it won't boil until quite a way over 100c, I'm not sure you have much to worry about.

Was the old radiator leaking? They don't often fail, but I suppose the new one will look smart in the engine bay :-).

The old one had seen better days JJ, but this is a pretty simple machine.

So boot struts arrived in under 48hrs and cost £30 delivered

A 5 min job is an overstatement

I propped the boot open with a bit of wood just in case and my son did one side while I did the other

Pop off the clip…

Unscrew the strut from the coupling on the pillar

And then screw the new strut in and replace the clip

What a world of difference

Before it would stay open but barely had any lift and then just drop freely from the horizontal and make a right bang
