I thought that it was the holes in the oil control rings that are meant to allow oil to pass through and down those drain holes that are too small and consequently get blocked.

I also understood that the new design of piston was necessary to accommodate the new design of oil control ring with its larger holes.

FYI I have just driven my wife's V60 D3 for around 15 minutes at over 3,000 rpm. Sounded just like most cars did at 70mph back in the 70s. Dunno yet whether or not it did anything useful.

Ahh I thought it was the actual ring cementing itself up, makes sense the oil feed in the piston would block first though.

As a former Master Technician working for Ford Retail, I can say, with a high degree of confidence that, unless you are using your Volvo at track days or Nuremburg weekly, then any oil meeting the manufacturer specifications will do the job.
Just saying 🤔
