Thank you for this gem. We had an clunk which was difficult to place (somewhere down the n/s front) but no idea what it was until I read your post, tried swaying the car and it clunked. First attempts to remove drop link were aborted due to not having an 18mm spanner but in the process finished said drop link off so it banged and rattled merrily afterwards. However, new link fitted now and car clunk free.

Thanks again

I have just spent the last few months chasing down a similar issue on my '04 V70R. Turned out the suspension top mount had pretty much entirely disintegrated. Only a £30 part!

Blimey mine were just over 70 per side as no point in doing one side as its recommended to do both sides as they would be equal. Had to get top mount and the rubber part that goes in the mount

when you say top mounts do you mean the rubber cup that goes on top of the spring, or the metal plate with bearing in that goes right at the top

price between the two is somewhat different but either way you've got one rubbery piece under tremendous strain and one with a bearing that you want to be of good quality, I wouldn't skimp on either, probably best to go Volvo branded or at least one of the good brands

Yeah, the rubber top mount, not the metal plate with the bearing in it.

I'm usually one for genuine Volvo parts, I'm pretty sure that is the ONLY non Volvo part on my car! But it had completely disintegrated, rendering the car unsafe to drive and that's all I could get my hands on at the time

Finally got to the bottom of it. Front brake pad, the one that fits inside the piston. The spring clip retaining bits. I put a new set of disks and pads in a couple of months ago and it looks like I must have distorted one of the clips.
The pad was rattling about when I tried it so took it out and bent the clips back in to shape, fresh copper grease on the back of pad and all quiet now.
Amazing how simple some fixes are.
Thanks for all the suggestions as always.
