544 Windscreen trim

Of all the unpleasant jobs I’ve had to tackle on my road to renovating my rusty Volvo, fitting these anodised aluminium trim strips is probably number one on my list. I am aware you don’t have to have fit these strips but I think they enhance the cars looks. I started the job this morning full of enthusiasm which quickly evaporated after failing 3 times to get the trim lip to stay in place as I attempted to pull the fitting rope out on the corners of the screen. I’ve heard other members say that as these trims are copies of the originals that there can be issues with the shape not being 100% correct! Ah well I shall sleep on it and summon a friend to assist with my next attempt. Wish me luck as I have been forced to fit the original chipped ( now repaired ) slightly scratched windscreen after receiving 2 new screens - both cracked!!!

I ran my amazon for years without the trim fitted, the view of the car from the front looks much better with it fitted.
Another pair of hands I found was essential. 1 of you pull the cord carefully while the other maintains some pressure on the trim, particularly at the corners. We started at the top in the centre.
Remember to slide the joint sections fully onto 1 section first.

Hi Splinelube thanks but have watched this video, it’s actually an Amazon in the film and the trim is slightly more robust than for the 544. He makes it look pretty straightforward with the speeded up tedious bits. But take it from me it’s far trickier than shown! Even Amazon Cars sub contract out to an expert fitting these delicate and expensive trim kits!

Anything looks easy when watching a Pro. Plastering a ceiling wearing a pair of strapped on stilts looks easy.
Most non pros end up wearing it!
I found working alone, I could fit the trim in a corner, then half way down the side the trim pops out at the corner behind me.
Then you need to start again with the pull cord. An assistant holding the corner while you pull the cord and ease the trim into place worked well for me. Just be patient to avoid kinking the trim.

I took my Amazon front screen trims out to reseal the rubber and upon attempting to re-fit them (after having watched a chap on YouTube make it look a piece of cake) absolutely struggled my a%$e off!
I think what I had unknowing done was bend the drivers side one taking it out and I'm sure that was causing me most of my issues but on the 4th attempt (about 4 hours later) after some carful reshaping succeeded!
Then the passenger side nearly fell in it fitted so much easier and was in in under half an hour, I can only assume I hadn't damaged this upon removal!
I did all of it on my own and based on previous thread comments sounds like its a lot easier with a second set of hands, good luck!

Oh and by the way my windscreen still leaks!

Well today with the assistance of a friend and 4 hours hard labour we managed to fit the new trim to front and rear screens of my 544. I am only 80% happy with the result. As stated previously the PV trim is smaller in section and possibly thinner aluminium than the Amazon version. I managed to kink it slightly in one place as it has to be teased and twisted to get the return lip on the underside to engage in the slot in the rubber screen surround. I lost count of the number of times we thought the lip was engaged, only to find it was actually resting on top of the rubber. The cord that is used to lift the rubber in order to engage the trim lip is actually fighting you and helping you all at the same time! These trims are copies of the originals and far from perfect in their shape especially at the corners. I can honestly say fitting them is a horrible job and pray I will never have to do it again.
