Cannot Jump Start My New V70
Just upgraded from an 850 to a 1998 V70. So far reasonably pleased but seem to be experiencing a higher than average number of body/electrical niggles with the car.
The tailgate boot lock is stuck and won't shut properly. Having been out in the dark fiddling with it I left the boot light on. Went to start it a day later and of course without the boot shutting properly the light remains on and I get a flat battery. Anyway jump started OK but on removal of the negative lead the engine stops. Tried again and left for a bit longer - same problem. Never had a problem with the 850 when starting this way. Ended up swapping the batteries between cars and jump started the other car fine without any problem. Now the flat ones charged up again in the other car I have swapped back and everything OK. Any ideas on why I would have this problem ? |

Strange one this, I would start by checking the earth between the engine & chassis also between the battery & chassis I'm not sure about Volvos as I have not had mine long but there may be an earth on the alternator as well on some cars the alternator are on rubber mounts but as i say not sure if this applies to Volvo's

Make sure your alternator is applying a charge to the battery by using a meter to measure the voltage with the engine off (typically 12,5 Volts) then repeat with the engine running and there should be an increase to around 13,5 Volts if it doesn't increase you have an issue with the alternator/ wiring and don't trust the dash lights to tell you the alternator is OK measure it at the battery with a meter - Mike
