Default Quick Q on autobox ATF cooler direction

Hi Chaps,

I hope to replace the ATF this weekend using the 'disconnect a cooler hose' method

Just wanted to double-check the direction of flow at the top connection on the radiator. It's a 2000MY T5 with the green plastic retaining clip.

I think the flow is out of the disconnected hose - but it pays to check, as I've seen videos showing the drain tube stuck into the radiator orifice!

Thanks

Hook the drain hose up to the upper transmission line - the flow is steady but surprisingly slow, so don't worry about it spurting out everywhere

I've attached the iPd guide which might be useful - I used their kit the first time I did it, and this guide was very informative.

Good luck

NB This is for the phase 1 4 speed autobox, but I'm pretty confident it applies to your 5 speed box as well - hopefully someone will be able to confirm?

Thanks for that info, RT - but it's a bit confusing nonetheless!

My 2000-reg C70 appears to be a 'transition year' model - having a 4-speed 'box, but with the green plastic hose retaining clips

I would assume (always dangerous!) that I follow the '850' photo in the guide (with metal clip), rather than the guide's reference to 'lower hose' in the photo below that.

I suppose I could always attach drain hoses to both sides of the disconnection to cover both bases

If its a 4 speed, then I'd agree with you and I'd follow the 850 plan

It'll be interesting to see what the flow direction is, when you do do the flush - please let us know.

Good luck

Sadly, my OH has had other plans this weekend

I was surprised that the 'IPD method' doesn't opt for an initial drain from the, er, drain plug followed by an immediate re-fill with the same quantity of fresh fluid.

I suppose if you use enough fluid then the 'successive dilutions' will achieve a reasonable level of clean fluid. Certainly better than what's in there at the moment

Do NOT do it!!
Tread very very very carefully.
Many a time with fresh fluid via your chosen method you can Fcuk the box up (Valve body mainly).
IF it's over due and filthy you would be safer with a succession of sump dumps.
Your call but you might just score an own goal otherwise.
