Default Gearbox problem

Just picked the car up from having the inner tie rod replaced and on driving along motorway the car seems to over rev and does a vigorous jerk with an almighty thump from the back of the car so much so that I actually thought someone had driven in to the back of me! I got it home but am now too worried to drive it in case it breaks down completely. No warning lights or messages on the dash....any ideas?

Hi,

As you don't say in your original post, I'm presuming it's a D5 geartronic 5 or 6 speed model?

In which case, if the over revving and subsequent thump is between gears (3rd to 4th?) it sound like either a fluid change is badly needed or the valve body inside the box is sticking/worn.

I had the same symptoms with my 185 6 speed auto and fortunately an atf change, oil counter reset and re-adaptation by my local independent specialist sorted the problem.

Hope this helps?

Paul

Sorry , yes it's a 185 geartronic 6 speed asin warner box. Those are the symptoms exactly. It had an ATF change 6/12 ago but no readaptation /reset as far as I know. How much is a dealer reset and worse case scenario would a valve body job be uber expensive??
Thanks

A full atf fluid change, reset, and readaptation is around £300 from memory, the valve body assembly for an AW 6 speed is £450 plus labour.

I understand that it can be done with the box in situ, but a fluid change and readaptation etc would probably still be necessary so a total cost would be around £1000 at a guess?

No doubt someone can give a more accurate cost from experience?

The place that had the tie rod replaced may have forgot an axle bolt or not pushed the axle back into the transmission. Or worst, they didn't suspend a detached axle and now the CV joint has got dismantled. Don't drive the car until sorted, it may damage the transmission.

You don't need to remove the axle to replace the inner or outer tie rods though.

only time i had this was when the gearbox oil was a bit low and a left or right corner caused it to do this. Set level correctly and all OK.
