Auto Shifter sticks in "P"
Hello,
Have had my XC90 for over 5 years and recently have used it substantially less than in the past. It's regularly left for a week or 2 at a time at the moment. Recently I have found that the gear shifter stays stuck in "P" immediately after starting up. This never happened when I used the car daily. Now I guessing there is some kind of interlock (solenoid?) that is getting stuck, because if I thump the gear shifter on the top, it frees up! Has anybody experienced this? Is there a simple fix? Any suggestions? David |

May seem a stupid question, but are you putting your foot on the footbrake at the same time? If not, then the box will not move out of park.

Actually that is a perfectly valid question. The problem actually could be "brainfade". I am over 50 now.......
The XC90 is a V8 and I have enjoyed it very much...but at over £1.30 per litre I picked up a sensible car (2008 Mini Cooper S) which uses less than half the fuel but is also so much more fun to drive that I have used it almost exclusively for 3 months. In fact is the first manual car I have owned for 12 years. Will do some testing to prove (or disprove) operator error and let you know! D |

OK. I eliminated brainfade as a problem. There defininitely is usage related stickage. Today have squirted WD40 into the gap around the shifter knob, and also lifted the gaiter trim to reveal the gubbins within and WD40'd all moving parts I could see.
After a 250 mile drive (longest in months) have not so far had a repeat of the stickage in 3 starts, so have reason to be slightly optimistic. Is it resolved? Not prepared to say yes yet.....will report back. |

Same problem intermittently
Does cable run under the car anywhere? - perhaps some salt/grit/muck on it? If I virtually stand on the footbrake while gently rocking the gear knob can feel a gentle clunk as the offending "thing" releases itself. Happens when parked on hills or flat so no rhyme or reason to it Let me know if you find a cure and vice versa |
