Buying advice....
Hi all !
Having owned volvo's in the past and now driving a T5, the wife would also like a Volvo ! Se likes the s40 and v40 and she does a lot of town driving and a little motorway. I was thinking of getting a 1997/8 s/v40 - 1.6. The questions are: 1. Is the 1.6 engine much more economical than the 1.8 ? 2. What is the diesel engine like for the 1997/8 year ? 4. What are the outputs for diesel, 1.6 and 1.8 engines? 3. What to look out? We really need one of the cars to be economical so help much appreciated. IceMan |

RE: Buying advice....
In reply to your add. I don't know if you'd be interested but I have a V40 1.8 SE (R reg 1997), with 57600 miles on the clock. An extensive service history, 4 new tyres costing over £300, an new 12 month MOT, just have 60,000 service, early. It is automatic, and includes sports/winter setting, A.B.S., drivers airbag.
The V40 auto is thirsty on petrol, I was getting 22-25 miles per gallon, however I've recently had it converted to LPG costing £1669, via P & T Autogas of Macclesfield whom are registered with the LPG Association. The LPG costs 29.9 (Morrisons) a litre, rather than 74.9p, and cost me last time £13.50 to fill rather than £40 for petrol, with better fuel consumption also. The car is in white (not an ex-Police car), and is immaculate. I'm looking for £6100 for the car (including the LPG conversion), if interested please e:mail me at NJWROE@AOL.COM, if not than my advice would be to buy a S40 1.6 for fuel economy not the 1.8 or 2.0 litre. RE: Buying advice....
Hi,
Although I have not driven one, from past experiences with various cars I would say that the 1.8 is *probably* your best bet as far as economy goes. The 1.6 is likely to be underpowered for the size of the car and so you will have to work it harder to compensate. The 1.8 on the other hand is more suitable to the size of the car and so you won't have to have shouch a heavy right foot... I drive the 1.8 440 (96) and get from Amsterdam to Leicester on a little over 20 quid (about 270 - 300km). My other halfs father who I brought the car from says the his V40 1.8 is better than the 440 for fuel economy, so I think it's reasonably frugal if you drive it correctly (incidently I do get about 150km per tank more from the 440 than he did, and do more 'spirited' driving, so driving style is important here!) Good Luck Stu |

You will find the 1.6 grossly underpowered for the size / weight of car.
I've driven a V40 1.8 and 1.6. The 1.8 wins on every count. Mike |

D19 - 440, 460, S40/V40
Configuration: SOHC Inline 4-cylinder DIESEL Displacement: 1.870 litres SAE Net Output: 90 Bhp Notes: All engines of this type were turbocharged. B4164 - S/V 40 Configuration: DOHC Inline 4-cylinder Displacement: 1.635 litres SAE Net Output: 105 Bhp Notes: Introduced in early 1997 as an underbored variant of the B4184. B4184 - S/V 40 Configuration: DOHC Inline 4-cylinder Displacement: 1.731 litres SAE Net Output: 115 Bhp - 125 Bhp Notes: Introduced 1995 with the B4204 engine. Engines designated with the suffix SM (introduced in mid-1998) are Mitsubishi Gasoline Direct Injection engines displacing 1.8 litres and producing 125 Bhp. Although I do not seem to be able to find the torque figures and max BHP revs which I find are a more useful figure uness you are revving hell out of the engine.... As for economy - i have not got a clue Stu |

RE: Buying advice....
Your LPG installation gives you better mpg? I've heard that mpg goes down with LPG.

RE: Buying advice....
Hi.
If you do a lot of town driving and there are no hills to traverse then I would go for the 1.6i. It has 109BHP @ 5800rpm and 145Nm of torque @ 4000rpm. It is a heavy car for the engine, but if you spend most of the time in traffic and don't go fast it will prove to be the most economical just due to the smaller capacity. Inside it will be like any other x40. Just remember that the majority of 1.6s will just be the basic car and may not even have a sunroof and heated seats. If someone out there sprung to a 1.6i CD then you would get the frugality of the smaller engine and the luxury of the CD trim level. Cheers, Dan. |
