Default running in engine

Sorry, silly question, but do you still need to do a "running in engine" for a new new car, and if so, any idea how many miles should it be for.
Thanks.

I think everyone will give you a different opinion on this. Some will say new cars are already run in, some will say you have to run them in.
I have always gone by my dad's advice, I run the car for the first 2000 odd miles or so, keeping it under 3500rpm (depending on the model) but every so often, take it nearly to the redline.

It may be coincidence, but all my cars have been faster than the same equivalent models, even the garages that have serviced them have noticed it. And I've tested that out a few times.....(on a closed road in case any police are reading haha)

At the end of the day, if you run the car in, you won't be doing any harm will you, yet if you redline it from the start, you never know what kind of pressure you're putting on new components.
So if you have the patiance, run it in.

With the power of the engines and high gearing today you aren't going to do any damage from over revving , and you cant really labour it at low rpm because of the huge torque available it will rapidly accellerate .
Just drive it normally , a few bursts of revs arent going to harm it ..
Racing engines are run in on the circuit by doing half a dozen moderate laps and off you go ....

I just drove mine like I hired it rather than stole it ;-) not had any problems so far. I'm getting about 550-575miles from a full tank to empty (odo reading).

An equally appropriate expression
