Have you put VIDA on the job and seen what it says is the fault? It would be unlikely that both servo motors on the two headlights would fail together so the fault is likely to be a circuit fault. VIDA will tell you which part of the circuit is failing. If you do not have VIDA, perhaps you should consider buying a VIDA/DiCE set and a cheap laptop on which to run it. Electronic cars today need electronic diagnosis and the old test of kicking the tyres won't help much when you have an electronic or electrical fault, especially since the car's ECU knows what the fault might be and has recorded it in its fault log. You just need VIDA to see what it says.

I had leveller motors on my AWD R . Tried to check them out with a 12v supply and knackered it..so be careful.had to buy new motor from volvo..mine were self levelling flavour so are different to yours.
Could be never been used for ages and both motors have seized. Seen to remember stripping motors down was simple..might have a few pics somewhere if you wish Cheers Bob.. |

If it were me I'd buy a 2nd hand switch pack (i.e. the complete unit with headlamp turn-switch, fog buttons and level wheel etc) and swap that out. They're unlikely to be expensive. It's a shot in the dark, but a likely cause given both lamp motors are not functioning. You could spend quite a bit of money and time going the VIDA route.

There is a control unit under the nearside headlight which is known to fry from water ingress. It's a Bosch part shared with BMW which can be located cheaper online than at Volvo. I'd be surprised if the switch is defunct but it's not impossible. Perhaps strip it and test for continuity and resistance across the range. But the best tact will be to plug in Vida and check what codes are logged and work from there. I'm South of Chesterfield and have Vida if you fancy a run out. |

Even if only one motor is bad, the control box could sense that and turn both off, to avoid having the two pointing in different directions.
