Tomorrow we head off from Cassis to Grenoble. In 2 minds as to whether to take the m/way from cassis to Grenoble ish, or m/way to Aix-en, the the wiggly windy hairpiny mountainous road. Don’t want to take forever getting there, but would like some ‘adventure’. Hmm what’s that saying...’adventure before demntia’

Finally home. And what a splendid trip. 1700 miles, nearly all in temps above 35 deg. Numerous regens along the way.

Fill up #1. 434 miles at 80 mph plus = 40.83 mpg

Fill up #2. 341 miles at 60 mph. = 51.67 mpg

Fill up #3. 159 miles running around up mountains. = 38.04 mpg

Fill up #4. 290 miles . M/way / D roads 50/50. = 48.83 mpg

Fill up #5. 378 miles , ditto. = 48.23 mpg

Then due to ferry workers blockade at Calais we were quite late coming home, we had filled up with wine and beer, and I was chasing a Porsche 9?? in uk for a good while at naughty mph ( v naughty) in sport mode. A noise in my left ear told me to slow down, but I’ve scupperred a good mpg for this tank. Superb car for the trip, but I still miss my old Landrover.

Interesting stats (to me).

It's interesting how the mpg changes between 60mph (51.8) and 80mph (40.8). It's quite signifcant!

I'm guessing, using law of averages, you'd get 46.2 if you travelled at 70mph.

What's also interesting is the speedometer and the mpg gauge readings, vs GPS and raw calcs on mpg. So, using GPS with my webcam set up. 60mph reads as 56-57mph, 80mph reads as 76-77mph.

When I look at average mpg on the readout - I get 46.26mpg..using "mileage against diesel bought" - I get 43.29mpg on the mpg "rolling average" display.

I'm guessing the 3mpg difference is down to inaccuracies on fuel bought against mileage and the fact aircon plays a part on drawing energy from the engine.

I guess, given France's record breaking June temperatures recently, the air con in your car was on most journeys??

I'm still trying to get a 50mpg read out - even if it's just once! Just to see whether it's doable! Lol!

The above readings were of course accurate fill ups via Fuelly, not the dashboard read out, which was obviously higher. I'm pretty sure if I had not have gone looking for lavender fields, as instructed, and ending up near Digne-les-Bains,in the mountains, and further similar wanderings on the last day, but had stayed on the autoroute, the last 2 readings would have been 52+ mpg each. When I bought the car, my aim was to get at least 1 tank of 50+ mpg!! yay!

That's good going.

I'm pleased with the economy on my V70 D3 stop start 2013. When I got the car the long term display average was 44mpg which surprised me, but that is what the normal use average is. On a motorway run 60+ is regular at 70mph, and I've seen near to 70mpg over a long distance when speed was lower due to traffic.

My 'target' is to see a range of more than 1,000 miles when I fill up. Have only managed about 950 miles so far. Nearly did it once but 5 miles before home the car started a DPF regen so that wrecked the figure. Managed 940 miles range on display this week.

Difficult for me to get decent full tank figures as I keep towing a caravan in the summer. Range then is about 500 miles which is still really good. Filling up with a caravan hitched up is no fun.

It's surprising how the extra weight and ride height (ie aerodynamics) can have when you compare your V70 D3 against an XC70 D3 (I've a non s/s one). Is yours an auto or manual? Overall, I think the 2ltr 5-cylinder D3 diesels appear to be a fairly frugal motor, but wondered why Volvo set the turbo at such incredibly low revs (or whether that can even be adjusted). I only have to breathe on the accelerator and the turbo seems to kick in!

Those are dreamland mpg figures for me. High 30s at best. Mine's the 185 D5 though, which seems to be the worst overall for consumption, of all the engine variants.

Mines a manual. Still clinking onto a manual gearbox

Most modern diesels boost from very low rev's now, quite amazing when I think back to my first turbo car (Renault 21 turbo) that wouldn't boost below 2,500rpm, and didn't really come on until 3,000rpm.

It's not that simple. The power required to overcome the air resistance is the speed relation to the power of three. So twice the speed, eight times the power requirement.
