V50 abs module

06 (55) 2.0d v50 abs module
Can I simply swap this out with a known good unit or will it need a software upgrade?

The ABS module is coded as part of the immobiliser and it's serial number is checked before the engine is allowed to start.

If the electronics in the old unit are good, then you can swap the entire controller module over to a replacement ABS pump/valves unit. If the original fault is in the electronics, then it is possible to swap the chip that stores the serial number data to a replacement unit (or read the chip and program it into the replacement) but it is a complicated process, and might be simpler to get replaced and programmed at a Volvo dealer.
