Here's my rev-counter.(sorry about the poor lighting in the pic) Original Smiths impulse type, which was a bit patchy in operation, so I gutted it and fitted the innards from a modern after-market Smiths max-hand type.(necessary now, as I've since fitted electronic ignition) Its on a home-made stainless steel bracket which screws to the windshield surround retaining screws. This was then sprayed black to match the windshield surround. I'm terrible about taking build pics, once I've started I tend to crack on till the job's done. I really should take more pictures along the way. Heaven knows, I'm not the world's greatest engineer, but I can see how useful it might be to others going down the same route. Watch this space! For those who want to connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge and still keep the dash warning light it is possible. You need a T piece connector but the regular ones you can get wont work as they stick out too far and touch the exhaust down pipe. This will work though:
This is essentially the same thing but at ninety degrees. It allows the regular electrical connection and the hose to the back of the gauge. This is what I used and it works perfectly.

question on aesthetics, or practicality??
so, a question for alf ista and dilip122s, and for all the rest of you..
on the dash, which is the better side to put the rev counter, if you were to choose? a: like hugh, the original spot, because, it's correct (ala 123GT), and why go against the volvo design team? surely they spent days, if not weeks debating this very point, so maybe it's safer/further from the drivers head/steering wheel, it's easier to read, maybe? b: between the wheel and pillar like dilip122s, 'cus it neater, out of the way? i'm debating this point a few week myself now |

Interesting one Gareth. I didnt consider this cause I was replacing an earlier rev counter that someone else fitted. I didnt like the look of it and it didnt work well. So I obviously used the same spot as there was two holes drilled in my dash top. Now that you come to mention it if I had to choose I would wonder too. The thought of drilling holes in the dash would probably frighten me a bit. I really like the way dillip did his, and by attaching it to the screen surround there is no worry of damaging things. I could be wrong but if you mounted it on the dash but on the door side I think the wheel would get in the way of seeing the gauge. If you do it dillip's way, its higher and there is no damage. If you dont like it you can always then move it to the dash. Only thing is though you would need to fashion a bracket to take it.

I mounted it in that place after looking at photos of the old works rally cars. Interestingly, the cars entered by Volvo themselves usually seem to have had the rev-counters mounted in the corner of the screen. You can just see it in the photo below:
