Default Noisy 2013 5cyl D4?

just a quick one, how noisy are other D4's? mine seems quite noisy 'dieselly' on idle but was wondering if this is a normal thing as some more modern diesels seem really quiet.

everything is all fine with it, works fine, pulls fine and no messages, but just seems like a noisy diesel!

Has it always been noisy or has it got gradually noisier? And what are you comparing it with?

Seals failure on the vacuum pump and/or the check valve to the brake servo failure can make them sound very rattly. A cheap and simple fix.

It just seems to be noisier than most other diesels, comparing to other 2l diesels when i pass/etc.

It may just be my expectations as it is 9 year old with 71k on the clock but sure it wasnt as noisy when i got it the other year.

spotted the following (https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=323518) and this is exactly what i see with the oil cap off. A loud clacking and vapour, so probably the same thing (annoyingly the OP never did give a resolution)

Mines been the same for all the 18 months I have had the car. It's normal. If you get a change in performance or a message up then investigate otherwise chill. Regards

Pump the brake pedal a few times whilst stationary and with the engine ticking over. Does the noise improve for a short time?

If it does it could be the vacuum non return valve which is located on the right hand side of the engine (looking towards the headlights) and is underneath the battery tray.

I had this with my 2011 D5 and it's not too bad a job to swap it yourself if you have some right angle torx keys.

The part (Volvo 31430964 - Brake Vacuum Pump repair valve) is circa £100 but it did the trick for me. Hope this helps...

Cheers
Robin
