Tuning Box !!
I'm driving 2003 V70 D5 with 150K on the car I'm thinking of fitting tuning box to improve MPG & Torque I'm wanting to know which 1 gives no problems.

None of the cheap tuning boxes will increase MPG. The only way I know to do that is to cut out the auto warm up cycle and fit what is in effect a manual choke switch, but they do make the car tricky to drive when it's cold because it will stall if you lift off the accelerator.
If your engine has 150K miles on it I would be real careful about trying to tune it, as it might result in a premature HG, clutch or other expensive failure. Buying cheap tuning boxes from Fleabay, rather than getting a professional MAP change done can be risky, because if the box is defective it can damage the ECU. If you want to increase the MPG try the following: 1/ Learn to drive for max economy (Slow acceleration, stay out of the turbo boost range and high gears etc). 2/ Use an 0w40 (0w30 for newer engines, or in winter) engine oil and a top quality friction reducing oil additive (Liqui Moly Ceratec is probably the best). It might also help to change the box oil if it's old. 3/ Pump the tyres up. 4/ Try and reduce the weight by dumping junk out the boot and only filling up to half a tank of fuel.

Not sure if he does one for the D5's yet, but Ron @ Synergy tuning/ RonBox makes the best one for the earlier cars (used a VW/audi engine) and a host of other vehicles. Made in the UK and can tailor the product to your particular needs if required.
Just about EVERYTHING on ebay is jokes, a proper box will run you £100-250, and a proper remap starts at around £250-450 With a diesel engine you can't magic MPG out of nowhere, at the same given injected volume required to make a given power required to make the vehicle hold a certain speed it will always use the same fuel. The gains that people are getting are due to the change in fueling (often increased pump pressure) during acceleration. Higher pump pressure on a set of worn injectors/pump might help make a better pattern = higher mpg vs. stock. So basically what skyship says. I run a RonBox on an older vw/audi engined car with a few other mods and its great, a solid performance increase, a slight mpg increase and generally a more responsive car. |

With respect skyship if you're staying out of boost range you are taking longer to build up speed & maybe labouring the engine changing up gears too soon and not letting the oil circulate properly. The turbo is there to assist & if a good balance of controlled right foot can be achieved I believe that should be more economical. A good tuning box should usually assist with performance particularly below 2000 rpm. I have a rover Ron synergy 2 box which I used on my rover 75 with good results. Ron is going to alter it to suit my Volvo d5 so once fitted I will report back with the results. |

I had a dtuk box on my d5 185 ad couldn't fault it.Smooth and alot better torque and power.
Also have a different type on my xc70 163.Its made by PSI tuning who do alot of land rover td5 stuff.Plugs into each injector and makes more of a difference than the dtuk box. As said a remap is better but the boxes are alot cheaper.I will get a remap (shark or mtm) but at present the car spends all my money just being maintained!
