Default Model Year Identification

Apologies if this is a silly question but how do you identify what model year the car is? I thought is was the year it was registered but I suspect I am wrong.

You are indeed. Basically a model year is the year before thw calender year ands there are normally two issues per year.

So my wife's V40 registered in Dec 2016 is model year 17.5 as it was built after about production week 45 (mid Nov). Earlier models built between about week 17 (mid May) and week 44 would be model year 17.0

If you look on the Volvo website support pages for the manuals for your car you wil see there are often 2 dates for the correct owners manual that reference those prodcution week dates.
Hope that helps.

The 10th character of the VIN indicates the model year:

...
L: 2020
M: 2021
N:2022
...

That will give the manufactured year but not the model year, mine is H which is 2016 but the car is a MY2017.

Thanks nu11eaf - happy to be corrected. I really must stop trusting Wikipedia for this type of thing.

Around June the next model year is produced , so model 22 year is now current . there maybe a few minor updates later on through the year but still a model year 22 into june 2022 . The VIN has a digit designated to Model Year ...
