Default Help?!! Damsel in distress ... Fuel pump timing issues

Hello folks **waves**

Bit of a damsel in distress post here - I have a 1985 Volkswagen LT50 horse box that runs the 2.4 Turbo Diesel straight six engine, non intercooled model (same as in the volvo 940) .... Now, finding a haynes manual for it has been like pulling teeth, but thanks to a post on here I have worked out it is a Green Volvo Book, and may be able to get one through a Dealers .....

Anyhow, the reason I am here is I need help, can any body tell me or have any diagrams/pics of where the marks on the pulleys, that drive the fuel pump via the toothed belt at the rear of the engine, need to be to time the pump up properly, the engine runs but is very lumpy and belching out a lot of white smoke from unburnt fuel ... Husband knows the right end of a spanner from the wrong 'un, but just doesn`t have the knowledge of this particular engine.

Thank you .....

Bless you, mine is the old TD (not the Tic intercooled) if that helps at all? But then that won`t matter if it`s basically the same engine will it? (sorry being blonde and female all in one go there aren`t I ? lolol) most certainly looking forward to the links tomorrow, thank you so much

I'd forgotten about these! Although it is quite possible that I posted about them! Too much beer! Anyway they are at k-jet.org, listed under the 700 series as the 900 diesels did not make it across the Atlantic
Somewhere in the house is a set of tools, but you must have some of them as you have done the belt a few times, however if you haven't should you know anyone going up and down regularly to NW9 you are welcome to a loan.

You can download the Green Guides free here from the internet, they are for the D24, you just don't get the turbo and intercooler part of the manuals

Ok, downloaded printed off and read, and hubs has been working on it all afternoon. When he got it 'in time' using the notches stated, it was running sweet but quelching smoke out like billiyo and wouldn`t start on it`s own with out a squirt of easy start (this was timed to the little line)....... However, there appears to be more marks on the pump pulley than stated in the guide? Other half isn`t sure which one is which or whether they should be on it (or whether it`s from damage??) ..... There`s one small line and 180 degrees away is a V shaped notch ......... He tried it on the large V and it was lumpy and still smoking like mad. So which mark should we be using, and what else do we need to be looking at for why it won`t start and why she is smoking like a biiiiiaaaatttchhhh (sorry language but I feel about ready to take a can of petrol and a match to her at the mo )

As far as I can remember (only did it the once several years ago) it is the V that is correct. Timing one might have thought would not go way out without outside help. As I am not a mechanic of any variety I can't comment further other than to ask when you last checked the valve clearances and to wonder about head gasket. After that I'm sure it would be on to the dreaded compression testing. If you are flush it might not be a bad idea to see if the auction for the £500 good condition estate is still on.
The D24 list people (at tufts.edu) will answer your questions definitively. As mentioned all the US engines are D24 or D24T, although the list members 'add an intercooler'. Keep an eye out for Tom Bryant who specialises in the engine having done some 200 rebuilds!

Just spotted that 940 24td is just down the road from me, wanted one for years, now have a v70 TD, but feeling like I should save that 940 too.

As for yours, when these engines are running right they really are great, even when compared to much newer engines. The timing is absolutely critical, you have to align the timing marks to the correct one, but then be careful with belt temsioners too as they can affect the timing by enough degrees to cause epic smoke. Suggest trying to advance it by a few degrees at a time until the smoke dissapears and the idle sounds nice and sharp,

Could be injectors or valves, apparently they are meant to be checked every 15k miles, sounds easy to do though
