Well, it worked when I drove it. So, yes, it is a stupid question. I mean, why would I sell a duffer? I think you'd notice. Or is there something else wrong with the car? What are the symptoms?

Hmm. Now that's got me wondering. Mine makes a clicking noise also, it's the solenoid injecting oil into the pulley. If that's all it is, then there might be nothing wrong with the one you've got. Check the timing marks are correct with the pulley 'at rest' (i.e. without oil pressure). However, I don't pretend expertise on this - mine is a phase-1 car, non VVT, which is why I've got it hanging around, left over from a donor car. What I will say is the car pulled like a train, even on 3 cylinders, when I drove it home. The misfire turned out to be a broken valve spring.
It is my belief that the clicking occurs when the installation to the camshaft is imprecise, so that at tick-over the VVT is having to compensate by advancing the cam opening artificially. Correctly installed, this shouldn't happen. But like already said, I don't pretend to be an expert, it's the only VVT I've ever owned. |

You might well be right. But wouldn't a dealership just love to sell you a new pulley and charge for fitting it...
