2002 V70 D5 - soot/coking in rubber air pipes
2002 V70 D5 200k - I've been fiddling around with starter motor today & took off the 3" rubber pipe that I'm guessing runs from the intercooler to the block. I noticed a sooty build up in the aluminium block to the right if the rubber pipe.
I took the 3 bolts out to inspect & noticed a heavy build up of coke/soot especially in an outlet port that goes directly into the engine block - may be restricting flow by 40-50%. Cleaned all this up & noticed that the lower end of the unit ie nearer the intercooler was more oily. Fired up the engine & noticed oily deposits had been 'fired out' of the open rubber pipe coming up from the intercooler. The engine oil used to be perfectly clean & it is due a change but wondered if this sounds like worn cylinder rings allowing oil to leak out. Normally the oil is clean but now it's black - whoops???! The way this seems to happen is that the oil comes from worn turbo seals, and the soot from an underperforming injector. When they meet up courtesy of the EGR valve (that "hole in the block" you mention) you get a delightful horrible gluey goopy paste, which makes the problem worse by making the engine make more smoke and deposit more soot.
Take the various pipes off and clean them out, but also attend to those turbo seals - apparently it's not too hard a job. Before mine were done I was doing a couple of hundred ML of oil per month or so: Afterwards, I'm using nil. zip. zero. |

...I've had a look & finding it difficult to track a thread here &/or youtube for V70 turbo seal replacement / repair. Anyone have any insight or leads - how complex a job is it?!?? C

you dont need to worry. They all look like that.
The first time u see it its - Err my motors all but dead.. Brush out what u can with GUNK or degreaser/carb cleaner. Poke a ball of cloth thru get it all as good as u can an re assemble. Do it again in 2 years time. I dont use oil but I get the shocker mess too. |
