Default Knocking noise right front area

Hi all,

I've got a noise that's driving me mad, dealer says they can't hear it so no help there.

Its a 2009 xc70 2WD version with only 20K on it.

When going over speed bumps and the front suspension is loaded up / unloaded, there is a knocking noise that's audible, you can't feel it through the steering wheel, and the car drives beautifully straight.

I've been under that corner on the car several times now and can find nothing wrong, nor could the dealer.

I've done loads of searches on here but nothing fits the symptoms of what I have.

Can anyone point me on the right direction?

Its a knock/pop, when the front right corner is loaded/unloaded.

I went down the ARB link to no avail. Turned out to be lower control arm bush.

Visually it looks ok, nothing snapped / broken etc, and the cars low mileage, any guidance how I could rule it out / test that part further?

Is it safe to remove the drop link(s) and take a drive to see if the noise stops?

Yes but don't go ragging round too many corners

Although you may as well just change them as they're cheap and probably fooked anyway.

Doubt it would be drop link as that would rattle when you load/unload the opposite side as well - therefore I suspect it's something specifically independent on that side. Top mount loose? damaged shock absorber?

Is it a single pop/knock for each load/unload or a series of regular noises, like if you had a worn out CV joint knocking?

I don't think thats true. I think it COULD be the drop link. Definitely worth a look.

Also worth checking hub bolts are tight as that can produce odd knocks and clunks.

Thanks guys, its a knock per load/unload of the drivers side front suspension.

I called the place I got it from, they were fair enough and confirmed I should disconnect the drop links and see if the noise goes, they could then post me some arb drop links.

They said its unusual to get any real suspension issues on a car of 20K mileage.

I bought the car from Bridgend, which is an 8 hour round trip for me so i'm reluctant to 'pop over'.

I'll give it a go later this week and post back.
