Default cutting out

I am having problems with intermittent cutting out of the engine, it can happen anytime whether travelling or stopped, there is no loss in power but the engine just cuts out and will not start for at least two minutes, when it restarts it runs perfectly, I have had the car in the garage (Volvo specialists) and have had the injection timing reset and the air flow sensor replaced, the pcb is not showing any faults! but to no avail. Please can anyone help,

Hi

I'm having a similar but not identical problem with my 850...
I do get the engine cutting without warning, but on restarting the engine has less power and the engine check light is on. If I drive for long enough, then the light clears itself and the engine picks up power, but if I am on short start-stop journeys, then the engine will continue to falter and run rough with a bit of smoke from the exhaust and higher fuel consumption.

Like you, I have replaced the MAF sensor. I thought this had cleared the problem for about a month until I started doing short journeys again and the problem returned.

I also changed all vacuum hoses on the car and the PTC heater with no improvement.

I have had the codes read and two were returned P0715 and P0716 which are to do with input/turbine speed sensing being dodgy. Unfortunately the garage that read these codes for me did not know how to interpret them...

Hopefully someone else might chime in who has seen either of our problems and offer something else to try...

Hi,

I'd change the air and fuel filters first.

It could be the fuel pump on the way out?-not sure though-

Or it could be getting air into the system somewhere-when something gets hot enough and starts to expand like a rubber pipe-

loz

Check for a loose connection to the fuel cut-off solenoid on the fuel pump, change the fuel filter (every 50,000 miles), or drain water from the filter.

All the best, Peter.

Is your cutting out dependent upon engine temperature at all?
Am just asking because mine seems to happen before the engine is up to full normal working temperature and does not happen at all once fully warmed up...

I have a new engine coolant temp sensor to try next.

I did change both fuel and air filter with no improvement.

My Dad has this exact problem in his 850 2.5 (petrol), I started a thread on this, see

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=57282

there is also a long running sticky thread on this. Don't know if you have a butterfly in a throttle body in your diesel? but if you do have I posted about this, having found on the net that when this gets dirty Volvo say it sends the wrong information to the computer and causes this problem of engine cutting out before it is fully warmed up but starting fine once fully warmed up

I omitted to say in my last posting that Volvo have found this problem re non starting when not fully warmed up and the butterfly in the throttle mechanism specifically in the 850
