Default Buying my first Volvo

Hi,

I'll getting rid of my beloved SAAB 93 very soon and I'm looking at buying a 2010/2011 V70. I was also thinking of going to an automatic after driving a merc auto for a few weeks when my SAAB was off the road, so my question is there any difference between the D3 and D5 auto boxes, as I would prefer the extra power of the D5 but if the D3 has a better box then that might sway me.

Thanks,

I have the XC70 D5 Geartronic and its really nice to drive, smooth etc but I think im loosing 5mpg against a manual. Urban doesn't make such a difference ie short trips etc but on a long run it can make quite a difference.
Worth considering the MPG with the gearbox choice, if you can go D5 it really is a great engine.

I'm pretty sure the only different automatic box is the ford double clutch power shift unit mated to the ford 2.0d engine. All 5cyl engines should use Volvo's own manual any or the Aisin warner automatic gearbox.

Cheers I thought so.

I'm just trying to reduce the amount of cars I have to test drive, as with D3/D5 auto/manual that is 4, then is the D5 185 or 205 that is 6! And there is not too many v70s down here!

D5 auto is my preference, but if the D3 will save me cash and still drive well then it might be the one.

Id go for the d5 auto. Mine a 57 reg 185bhp and is quick (I had a c30 2.0d before and an s40 t5 before that) and this car is by far the most comfortable,
Just wish I knew about the 205bhp engine but the 185 is fine for me. I can roughly get arounf 450 to 500 miles from a tank if i dont have a heavy foot

I have had 3 automatic Volvos, ranging from 52 reg 2.4, through 06 reg D5 (185bhp) to current 3.2 petrol.

Have been very satisfied with all of them although fuel consumption on current 3.2 is at best 28-30mpg.

Certainly wouldn't go back to a manual box now.

If your looking at 2010/2011 then you will be looking at the 205bhp D5 as the change over point from 185bhp D5 was the 59 reg models. Not sure when the 215bhp D5 was introduced but I'm guessing 2012. Be carefull when looking for D3's as they were originally 163bhp, but that engine later became badged the D4 and the D3 became 136bhp, again I think that change was in 2012.
