Default 940 coolant leak

Hi, excuse my ignorance, but after having the head gasket done on my 95my 940 lot, I am still losing coolant.
There seems to be a weep on a cylindrical component that sits below the turbo, but not sure what that bit is.
No sign so far of leaking hoses, but I will replace them as they are old.
Any advice as to what the part is that may have the leak( just below the turbo)?

It sounds like you're describing the wastegate which definitely won't have a coolant leak, can you attach a photo?

Perhaps engine oil cooler/oil filter area? Photo would help.

My 940 was leaking 0.5 litres of coolant and the oil cooler hoses were the culprit. Prior leaking a bit also and was heater control valve behind engine on my LPT 940.

Hi
if you had the job done buy a garage
take it back and ask them to tell you where the leak is
it might be the head gasket again

I think my heater control must be the culprit in MY leak as it only seems to leak in the winter.... Time for a new one, maybe

Where is the oil cooler. Do all 940's turbos have them? Mine is 1998 Celebration?

Oil cooler is just below the oil filter. Access is from below. 2 coolant hoses in my case one split at jubilee clip. I removed the oil filter to get better access. A DIY job if you have the tools and mobility.

I have been chasing coolant leaks on two 940s recently and believe I've just this evening fixed the one that was annoying me most. This one was totally mysterious as there were no physical signs at all and wherever I parked the car, whether hot or cold, was always bone dry underneath afterwards.

The clue I had was upon parking at work this morning in hot sunshine tight up to a dark coloured plastic fence panel I saw a sort of shimmering heat haze coming up from the right hand side of the radiator. Barely visible.

Upon getting home this evening I checked thoroughly with a hot engine using a torch. Although the system was holding pressure well there was the slightest hint of moisture around where the bottom radiator hose connects onto the radiator. Squeezing this hose produced a small, but clearly visible, quantity of coolant around the join which did not happen when the engine was cold. I thought it might be the plastic failing but I was able to tighten the hose clamp slightly and it appeared to stop.

When I last flushed the system I replaced the bottom hose clamp with a marine grade stainless steel one. This is the second time I've had a leak with one of those after fitting it new and I wonder whether they might stretch slightly in use or maybe the hose moulds itself to the shape after a while causing it to become very slightly loose.

This leak must have been primarily steam. It was leading me to have to refill the header tank every couple of hundred miles or so.

In the course of fixing the cooling systems on two of my fleet I have also encountered within the last eighteen months all of the following.
  • Porous oil cooler hoses due to oil contamination from leaking oil cooler oil seal
  • Loose hose clip on a brand new oil cooler hose (same issue as main text above?)
  • Leaking top seal on waterpump due to oil contamination from leaking cam seal
  • Leaking gasket between waterpump and block
  • Crumbling plastic turbo heater valve under the distributor
  • Very hard to spot crack in plastic end tank on a radiator which only leaked when hot

All of these were hard to find but very easy to fix and during the hunt led me at times to assume that something much worse, e.g. head gasket, heater matrix, core plug, must be at fault. And before anyone says core plugs are easy, most of them require manifolds to be removed for access and Volvo ones have a reputation for being hard to remove.

Best of luck finding it and I hope the hints above are of use to you. Apologies for the long post.

Watching this CLOSELY as I have identical issue - not long ago whe was only using coolant on the motorway but now she drops 2 litres overnight while stationary and there appears to be a drip from under the back of the turbo.

She has just left on a flatbed to go back to the bloke who about a month or so ago did headgasket and clutch at VAST expense.
