i would say you certainly do know what your talking about, your quite right, due to the extremely close tolerances achievable by modern machine tools these engines are fully loosened up by 15k to say it needs 50k is a nonsense, nice to have a hands on diesel expert on board, any one who was a chief enginnering officer in the real world of marine enginnering gets my vote (we have far to many chair bound warriors around the forums in my humble opinion)

There is a huge world of difference between marine diesels and those for use on land based vehicles. So there is no need for snidy remarks, as they are not appreciated on these forums.

I read this as a compliment...

And I agree with the fact that cars don't need running in so much nowadays, in fact I heard once that if you run a car in too gently it can glaze the pistons and cause more trouble later than just drving the car normally when it's new.

spot on keat ,peter someone who has reached the rank of chief engineer in the merchant navy is no fool and his opinions should be viewed worthy and not dismised with a cheap comment, yes of course there are differences bewtween marine diesels and car diesals as there are for example bewtween aircraft piston engines and car engines but the basic principles hold true, as for for my so called snidy comments its nice to have practical people on board who have actually been at the coal face so to speak,i find their comments far more valid in most cases than that of the arm chair theorists, as we used to say to the more pompous lecturers at college those who can do, those who cannot teach, which is of course a bit unfair in some cases, but not all!

That is very true, Sir. Citroen were renowned in recommending a running in speed of around 60 mph (with the advent of the DS19) instead of the not much more than 30 mph advocated by the rest of the motor trade. The idea was that the engine bedded in much better with near normal running conditions (working at about it's mid point) than being caused to pussy-foot it's way around. A source of amazement has been some of the recent engines fitted to an Italian cargo ship which produce 25,000 bhp at about 150 rpm!! Now that would make the average petrol-head splutter!!

All the above are correct 'identifiers' for an Exec model but the easiest and most visible give-away is that the roof rails are aluminium rather than black.
