Default Variable tick over

My 1990 16v 740 auto ticks over about 800 rpm but sometimes stalls when you engage gear and when warm will go to about 1500rpm in Park. Any thoughts?

the dreaded idle problem. i am having kind of similar problems with mine and have tried a lot of different things. so far unsuccessfully! The gods of idle might be fairer to you though...
first check your TPS is set correctly. loads of write ups on this.
check your IAC is functioning correctly
Remove and clean your throttle body
get you car smoke tested.
