Oh bother
I've known my rear bumper iron wasn't the best but I didn't realise how bad until today when I pulled the bumper off to remove the three top trims to be painted.
So check your bumper irons everyone! |

😀😀good shout, although I'm not sure I'd appreciate my dark grey leather seats in your Iberian sunshine in August, (especially as my air con isn't working)
Cheers Steve |

I'd suggest separate the steel and aluminium by unbolting then electrolytically derust the steel part, clean the aluminium with wire brushes, wet'n'dry etc gradually going finer until it's bright and shiny (like a mirror) then use clear lacquer over the aluminium and a direct to metal paint on the steel. Maybe use a mica, silicon or similar insulating gasket between the steel and aluminium and/or silicone grease to help prevent galvanic (electrolytic) corrosion recurring.

I agree with Scooby , clean everything as best you can , make gaskets from soft drinks bottle to act as insulating buffers . Use stainless steel washers , nuts & bolts smothered in silicone grease to prevent any further damage .
Used to use similar method when rebuilding Land Rovers for people , certainly stopped the fizzy aluminium action Goood luck

Mines the same, I just welded 2 bolts to a plate and feed through.
I had the same problem with the 360 gearbox mounts with steel cased bushes. Primer protects aluminium well aginst steel, originally the 940 had some sort of isolator between the bumper and the mount, but they used steel bolts pressed insert into the aluminium which defeats the isoloation. Stainless steel is a closer electrical match to aluminium, and maybe Ok to use here, I'm not sure though. Resin coating would help seal-in any metal mixture, as its the moisture that is the problem. Rear trailing arms similar problem. |

As you rightly point out, stainless steel has many similar properties to aluminium so may be an option here.
