Default OBD II vs 2002 S60

Hello All

Volvo S60 D5 2002
OBD II: ELM 327
Torque Free Android

I pair smartphone to obd and is says it is paired, but it tells me: no response from ECU, have you turned ignition on" or something similar?

I have read 2002 diesels have no obd, so why the hell they put connecter under lights switch?

2002 D5 does have OBD2
Turn your ignition on.

It was turned on all the time. Should It be in position I or II or with engine on? Should I turn ignition on prior inserting ELM box into socket or after?

It's likely to be the OBDII elm reader itself, cheap Chinese ones have a habit of not working well with the Diesels

I have an Autel MD801 (EU702) and the display turns on just by plugging into the OBD whatever the key position, however to interrogate the ECU, the ignition needs to be on position 2 either with the engine is running or not.
Some functions need the engine running e.g. live data and some need the engine off e.g. code erasing but all need at least key position 2.
You really need to try another code reader to establish whether it's your OBD port at fault or your ELM.
