Default 2008 Volvo V50 2.0D - clutch diagnostic help

Good evening all,

Would really appreciate some of your support - I'm trying to diagnose a fault that has occured on my 2008 volvo V50 2.0D clutch.

The pedal has lost resistance and now gets stuck to the floor and not surprisingly this sometimes prevents me from changing gear - If I pump the pedal hard and often enough the functionality is restored momentarily before it shortly fails again. The brake and clutch fluid reservoir had lost some fluid so I have refilled it and bled the system to no avail.

Now as I'm looking to diagnose the issue I felt certain it was an issue with the slave cylinder. This evening I found pools of brake/clutch fluid on top of the area that the clutch cables attach to shown in the photo attached. I did clean this up but I can assure you there were pools of clutch fluid in that area. This has thrown me.

What is the component that the clutch cables attach to in the photos and is it possible the fluid is leaking from around this?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Those are the gearchange cables.. It sounds as if you have a leaky clutch slave cylinder which is in the bell housing, is your leak coming from the joint between engine and gearbox right at the bottom under the car ? There was a recall about 2013 concerning the clutch master cylinder , I would check your volvo dealer to see if that was done or not too.

Hi Clan,

Thanks for your reply - I've contacted my local Volvo and they're getting back to me tomorrow RE: any recalls.

Are you aware of any diagnostic test I can do to narrow down this fault to either the slave cylinder or master cylinder with a decent level of certainty? BTW I did check underneath the bell housing and I did not see much evidence of any clutch fluid under there - the only signs of clutch and brake fluid were in the area shown on the attached photo.

I'm preparing to replace the clutch, CSC and Dual mass flywheel, but I want to be absolutely certain this is the issue before I start the job!

Tom

you need to find the source of that leak I cant see how the fluid would get on top of the gearbox ?? Is the fluid coming out of the bottom of the joint between engine and gearbox or is it bone dry?
