Vvt pulley refurbishment
Just replaced my vvt pulley had the dreaded brr brr tick. Working in engineering it does not sit well for me to say it's broken having spent most my life repairing broken things.
So decide to strip down my old pulley to refurb was going to post pics but there too big for forum attachments. The bolts holding together have security head could not find the right socket. So made do with the tools I had the bolt are just outbound m6 x 16mm and the inbound are m6 x 35mm flanged will replace these with normale hex heads as security heads only there to prevent you seeing the internals. Stripped and cleaned the parts with a seal in degreaser then the internals are soaking in a acetone bath for a week a lot of detritus coming out of internal passages which is a common cause of failure internal passages being blocked. Would have posted photo's but tried to up load and seem to be too large. |

When i took mine apart, i thought that the wear was at the point where the vanes make contact with the outer part

There are two ways of keeping a block clean. Firstly use a real good major brand full synthetic that is a good cleaner. The best common one is Shell Helix Ultra 0 or 5w40 (Must be Acea A3/B4), although Mobil 0w40 is also a good cleaner that has lots of detegent additive included. Obviously the detergent and dispersant additives in the oil run out (They also fail if there is any anti freeze in the oil), so too long an OCI is bad news. The rebuild
Here are the photo's of the rebuild of the vvt pulley after the soak in the
acetone bath and seen all the detritus. I decided to look further and remove the vanes small retaining spring keeping them in place. No sign of wear on any of the machined faces. So decided to rebuild vvt as the most obvious point of failure has been blocked internal passages. |
