Exclamation Let's talk Thermostats!

Does anyone know..

I have a 2006 V70 T5. I need to replace my thermostat.

I had it off yesterday when doing the PCV. I have gone to purchase one online only to see that they come complete with the housing (no idea why I don't need the housing!)

This obviously is a tidy sum. £$£$£$£$£.

Does anyone know if the D5 thermostat will fit my T5 because for what ever reason unknown to mankind you can buy the thermostat on a D5 separate to the housing much cheaper and from.looking at photos of the stats online. It's looks like the same bloody thermostat!

Can anyone clarify any of this? Help is massively appreciated.

Keep volvoin'!

Peace.

On a russian forum, some guy did indeed place a d5 thermostat into a petrol engine. He said it was working well, however he didn't mention his petrol engine - turbo or not. Turbo ones have cooler thermostats. I'd just make sure the two opening temperatures match.

And you are correct, splitting the housing allows to replace only the thermostat part easily. I have not idea why the market - Bmw did the same - went into this direction of selling only the whole assembly - there is absolutely no one, not even the aftermarket parts makers that offer the thermostat alone.
Mystery.

Jut changed mine on 2006 V70 D5, big improvement, engine up to operating temp 50% quicker....got the assembly from Volvo complete with housing as Volvo do not supply thermostat only on D5, not sure were you got this info? i assume your talking about aftermarket...

I know some members have bought Gates thermos and fitted...

This should fit your T5.

NOT intended as a thread hijack:

What could the benefits of going to the combined thermostat housing be? It's so big!

1) You're forced to change BOTH stat and sensor when either goes? (not the very worst of ideas)
2) The height of the housing is there to clear something (like the power steering pump)?

Assuming you have the B5244T5 (you don't say), there are high quality thermostat options for less than £15 delivered e.g. Gates for less than a tenner, Wahler (who most likely make the genuine) one for £13.
They also have the correct opening temperature of 90°C as opposed to 91°C
