Hello folks
I'm dropping in to say the issue was finally solved today by our local garage - an alternative Volvo dealer supplied exploded view of the headlamp and the correct contact units/ adapters (igniters?) specifically part no CH 37839 to hold the light bulbs were ordered.
Bingo, we have MOT and saved £1940.00!

So:

Doves Volvo dealer in Croydon is comically inept or blatantly ripping off customers and Volvo UK back them up;
If it were not for volvoforums we would have had no information other than the official line: "there's a fault with the beam deflectors in your headlamps and they both need replacing".
I contacted and was responded to by Volvo UK representative Mohammed who took the information, (presumably investigated) then simply repeated the line back to me - "you need new headlamps Sir".

I hereby blow a big raspberry at those useless twerps.

Just out of interest who in the service department did you deal with at the aforementioned dealer above?

In the past I have very good service from Glynn

Follow up because I noticed this thread now comes up on a google search :

My 2006 XC90 was incorrectly fitted with Xenon D1S headlamp bulbs causing headlamp beam dazzle and consequent MOT failure.

The car needs D2R bulbs but they could not be attached to the loom until
an exploded view was obtained that showed the correct contact unit part no CH 37839 was missing.

Shadeyman : thanks for the advice and photo, it set me off on the road to enlightenment; a picture is worth a thousand words but a part number was better when facing the 'foreign language' of auto problems :-)

Clan : Thanks to you too for the help. However I'm just the bloke whose wife came home with a 'fishy' quote and saying the 'corresponding igniter' to my local mechanic did not progress things… and I've droned on all this year about the Volvo UK official line …i'm sure they should have known what the correct parts should be and that total headlamp replacement was a silly idea.

Cath123: On reflection I've decided not to mudsling but will not be patronising the usual main dealer any more.

I wonder why it was fitted with D1S bulbs? And why they didn't work?

Obviously something to do with the headlight design I assume although I would need to see a diagram of your headlights and my S60 ones to try and work it out.
