Default 144 wheels

From memory (I'm not near my cars!) there were two different wheel styles on 144s. The early ones accepted stainless hub caps which look like ribbed-edge Amazon ones - these wheels have raised nibs to grip the cap. Later ones are smooth here, are more bulbous (if you follow) and only accept smaller diameter shiney caps which screw onto central covers trapped over the axle nut by the wheels. If unclear, no doubt a search for relevant pics via google will show you the different types: if not, PM me and I'll take a pic of my '68 142 wheel as compared with my '73 144GL type.

Not near you I know, but I have several of both types available (most with naff tyres) if interested.

Hi Sandy,

I'm Sam Barker's mate in Edinburgh with some 144 steel wheels. I thought I'd posted something already, but in my own clever way I've cocked it up and this is probably the first you're heard from me.

I do indeed have a set of nice, plain 4.5" wide 144 steels freshly scrubbed and painted satin black, currently wearing a set of brand new rally tyres and taking up space in the loft. I think I'd like to keep the tyres, but the wheels are surplus to requirements - they don't fit my Amazon wagon.

Let me know if you're still interested.

All the best,

Nigel

And I've found my early hubcaps.
My 144 is too modified to cope with stock wheels, so if you want my 'caps to go with Nog's wheels PM me!

Hi yes they do fit I have used GLT wheels on a number 140s and 164s they look great but sometimes you can get problems with the little plastic centre caps there are two types one is deeper than the other you need the deeper ones to clear the grease caps otherwise they do not sit down tight and come off. I am new to this forum thing so I dont know how to send you a picture if I can I will regards Mike Hollebone.
Ps I have various sets of wheels in stock Phone me on 01548 560913
